Memecoins and Access to the Full Market

Robinhood Chain

People are buying "funny internet coins" to get rich. And some of them are.

That is the uncomfortable truth sitting underneath the early weeks of Robinhood Chain. We launched the network to support tokenized stocks, ETFs, and on-chain finance. What arrived first, loudly, was memecoins - joke tokens, mascot coins, culture coins - the kind of assets critics dismiss as worthless and buyers treat as a ticket.

"Call them funny internet coins if you want," said Vlad Tenev, CEO of Robinhood. "People are using them to try to get rich, and some of them are getting rich. Our job is not to lecture the market about what is serious enough. Our job is to hope we can keep providing opportunities that let everyday users take part in all of it - stocks, crypto, prediction markets, tokenized assets, and yes, the speculative corners too."

That does not mean every memecoin is a good idea. Most are not. They can go to zero. They are usually not affiliated with Robinhood. They are often pure speculation with little or no utility. Getting rich is not a promise - it is a lottery some people have won, and many more will lose.

But pretending that activity is not real, or that only "serious" assets deserve a seat at the table, misses the point of why Robinhood exists. Finance has always had a speculative edge. What changed is who gets to participate.

Access over gatekeeping

We can only hope to provide opportunities which allow users to take part in all of the market - not just the parts that look respectable in a press release. Robinhood Chain is permissionless by design. That means third parties can deploy tokens we would never invent ourselves. It also means retail investors finally get infrastructure that does not stop at the blue-chip menu.

Our focus remains building durable products: stock tokens, wallets, DeFi rails, and tools that make ownership clearer. Memecoin mania may fade. The principle should not. If wealth is being created somewhere in the market, people should have a fair shot at being in the room.

About Robinhood Chain

Robinhood Chain is Robinhood's Ethereum layer-2 network, launched to support tokenized real-world assets, DeFi products, and related on-chain experiences. Because the chain is permissionless, third parties can deploy tokens and applications without Robinhood's approval. Availability of products and features varies by jurisdiction and account eligibility.
